Nonetheless, it appears that BPD-I show sleep PSG peculiarities. In addition, the effect of different medications on sleep has been rarely controlled for in previous studies thus, even if BPD-I differ from controls, it is possible that medication further alters sleep architecture. These authors did not, however, confirm previous polysomnographic depression-like observations in BPD-I. 2 recently observed greater delta power in the sleep NREM microstructure of BPD-I, even if participants had no history or symptoms of concomitant affective disorders. Even when concomitant depression was controlled for, most studies have found either shortened REM latency or increased REM density. These results suggested that BPD-I shared common sleep and biological features with severe depression sufferers. In earlier studies, shortened rapid eye movement (REM) latency 3, 4 and greater REM density 3, 5 were observed in BPD-I compared to controls. 2 – 10 All of them, including the most recent, 2 have been aimed at characterizing the sleep of BPD-I by taking into account their personality peculiarities, which are numerous compared to controls, and comparing them with, for example, individuals with Axis-I diagnoses (e.g., severe depression) or controls who describe themselves as good sleepers. Only a handful of studies on BPD-I and their sleep have been published so far. ![]() 2 Although the sleep of BPD-I has been studied before, 2 – 10 little research has been aimed at quantifying the subjective sleep quality of these individuals and the severity of their sleep difficulties. In addition to this broad array of symptoms, BPD-I report severe sleep difficulties. 1 Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD-I) report a wide range of symptoms such as mood instability, impulsivity, and difficulty concentrating and maintaining focus. The prevalence of borderline personality disorder is 1% to 2% in the general population.
